​Folk music has come a long way since it was first used to describe the music of musicians like Woody Guthrie and later Bob Dylan.  Folk artists today are experimenters who dabble in different genres, integrating various musical influences into their songs. Their music could be instrumental and even include electric instruments instead of traditional acoustic instruments.  Take it a tiny step further, and you can include World Music, a term that is generally used to describe any folk or ethnic music originating outside of the USA.

 

We aim to challenge the idea that folk music is American, narrative based, using acoustic instruments. From the outset, INTERPLANETARY FOLK will be as inclusive as possible, in the hope of changing the perception of what folk music is, and drawing new audiences. Hence you will find that we have invited Maskandi, Afrikaans, ethno-folk and many other diverse practitioners to join our line-up of the usual Folk suspects.

Even the convention of Festivals happening over day or a weekend will be challenged: INTERPLANETARY FOLK will take place over the span of a week, from Monday 26 September to Sunday 2 October, with 4 performances per evening (one of the free!), and a select group of musicians offering workshops in the afternoon.

The Blah Blah Bar opened its doors just more than two years ago, with the intention of becoming the City’s primary small music venue. It has a live music programme that includes all genres of music, including Rock, Folk, Jazz & Classical, and curates several innovative brands (Counterpoint, Launchpad open mic & co/LAB) that challenge musicians and convention. Its live music programme now runs for 5 days per week, 52 weeks per year. To date more than 200 performances have been presented and more 40 000 people have passed through the Blah Blah doors. The audiences it attracts are creative, multi-racial and cross-generation, as was the intention. It also serves an excellent pizza….

​urban noizz was originally established in the Eighties, and worked with most of the sub-culture bands that eked an existence in those years, the cards being stacked wholly against such endeavor at the time. It has made a comeback now to continue its original programme of supporting and promoting original music.
