DEREK GRIPPER

Derek’s mission is to bring “African guitar into the classical mainstream.” His album One Night on Earth: Music from the Strings of Mali, released in 2012, did just that. Hailed as one of South Africa's greatest classical guitarists, he has since collaborated with John Williams, and his compositions has been recorded by The Cronos Quartet.

“Gripper has cracked it…his playing has a depthless beauty, which does full justice to the complexity of Toumani’s compositions. To do so without any hint of the music being dumbed down is a staggering achievement on solo guitar.”

[Nigel Williamson, Songlines Magazine]

DIZU PLAATJIES & IBUYAMBO ENSEMBLE

Having started his musical career in the early Eighties with the legendary marimba group AmamPondo, Dizu has since matured into a world-class musician, collaborating with musicians from all over the planet in many genres, including electronic dance music and jazz - but never losing sight of his roots. He has almost singlehandedly taken traditional South African music into areas where it never thought it could go. Expect an awesome performance from this local star.

ANTON GOOSEN

When he was 17, a guidance counsellor suggested to Goosen that he abandon his music career. In 1963, Goosen was expelled from boarding school after being caught in a bath playing guitar and smoking. His guitar was confiscated and its case filled with bricks. Despite this, Goosen persevered and formed his high school's first rock band that same year. Today he is revered as the grandfather of Afrikaans Folk-Rock.

NEWMAN & SCHILDER

A collaboration between two local masters in South African music. Steve Newman, somewhat of a local legend, provides a skilled mastery of the acoustic guitar and Hilton Schilder is a world-renowned multi-instrumentalist.  Their music is described as “a sonic journey from the slopes of Table Mountain and District 6 to the heart of the Kalahari”, mixing Ghoema with Cape Jazz and rhythms from upcountry.

LAURIE LEVINE & JOSIE FIELD

Laurie Levine's music is a revelation of what can happen when comfort zones are jettisoned, old habits sent packing and boundaries trampled on. Her songs are extraordinary tales of emotional dislocation, leaving and homecoming, and, mostly, love.

Josie is no ordinary artist. She calls her sound ‘Indie Soul’ - a modern fusion of acoustic meets digital with a deep 60’s soul flavour that tugs on the heart strings. Experience the intimate nature and soulful performance of one of South Africa’s most versatile and experienced singer songwriters performing some of her best works.

Hailing from Empangeni in the heart of Zululand, Qadasi and Maqhinga are an acoustic duo on a quest to revive the powerful sounds of traditional Maskandi music. Both professional musicians in their own right and sharing the same vision, joining forces has resulted in an international caliber of music which represents the heart and soul of South African roots music. This will be their first performance in the Mother City.

DARK PRIVILEGE

Never heard of them? We're not surprised...because its a brand new outfit: Versatile violin player Hezron Chetty has linked up with the sweet-voiced Jonno Tait (Hatchetman) to form this outfit a few weeks ago. Though from very different backgrounds, their on-stage energy is electrifying and rousing - truly a match made in music-heaven. Their recent gig at Blah Blah Bar had the audience on their feet shouting for more. Warning: Pack your Calmettes when you book for this one.

MR. CAT & THE JACKAL

In our humble opinion, one of South Africa's most underrated bands. MC&TJ's spirited performance recently almost blew Gogol Bordello off the stage and into the nearby ocean. Combining Irish folk with a swampy blues, and giving it a local theatrical twist, these guys have big things coming their way. They will be performing as a three-piece.

GERT VLOK NEL

Vlok Nel shot onto the scene many years ago with his debut work, Om te Lewe is Onnatuurlik for which he won the coveted Ingrid Jonker Prize and has since been making inspired Folk music. The undisputed king of lyrics, his songs about life in the small Karoo towns of the Hinterland is poignant and mesmerising, poetic odes to a life of hardship and toil. The working man's Johny Cash....in Afrikaans

Their hard-hitting Spanish and Roma influenced vocals are accompanied by a plethora of varying instruments and styles that will keep you pining for more.

SIMON VAN GEND

The Simon van Gend Band is a “folky foot-tapping” trio from Cape Town, their music best described as an introspective mixture of indie/folk/rock. Simon van Gend created a interesting project where he wrote a song a week for an entire year, whilst touring in the US and Germany. His recently released album, Suffer Well, has had the local tongues wagging. Don't miss this rare performance by the full band (Ross Campbell :drums & Eric Michot: bass)

RIKU LÄTTI & CHURCHIL NAUDE

Having released 10 albums and winning many accolades producing soundtracks for local TV, there can be no doubt that Riku Lätti is a seasoned and experienced musician. Pigeonholing Lätti’s music into specific categories proves a difficult venture as his music varies in style and genre. Francois van Coke and Karen Zoid say it best: “geen pretensie, geen beheer” – unpretentious and unregulated, deeply honest music from a skilled musician.

Churchil Naude’s Afrikaans rap is praised by Koos Kombuis and many other big names in Afrikaans music. His performances are often described as musical poetry as his control of the vernacular is so graceful and the lyrics are on pertinent social issues. Combined,  Churchil and Riku provide a truly special musical experience through the Wasgoedlyn Project.

Blessed with a multiple octave range, the ability to put pen to paper and lyrically reveal her inner most thoughts and emotions, her mere 20 years of life experience belies her ability to take to the stage and win over an audience with a single song.
